Jonathan's Story

The full story of Jonathan's life...or at least the important parts.

Early life

Homeschooled throughout his life, Jonathan always had connection and community. He earned several awards for community service, trained in disaster relief and emergency services, joined the Eta Sigma Alpha honor society, held leadership roles in the Civil Air Patrol, and served as president of the first homeschool Junior Civitan club.

Jonathan has carried a passion for people,  always fascinated by their stories and what drives them. Growing up in the church, he dreamed of becoming a pastor, though life ultimately had a different path in store...

Continued Success

Diagnosed with health challenges early in life, Jonathan developed hip issues that limited his physical activity, but his momentum was far from over. While pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he served in multiple roles within his school’s Student Government Association, eventually rising to represent all North Carolina students on the State Board of Community Colleges. Sitting on top of the world, it felt like things could only get better from there...

Life changes us all

Over time, Jonathan’s bipolar symptoms became more obvious. Compounded by ongoing physical pain, he was prescribed medication following a hip replacement. The demands of a labor-intensive job increased his reliance on these opioids, ultimately leading to addiction. After losing his job when he could no longer keep up with the physical demands, and after moving multiple times, he turned to alcohol for comfort. While he tried to quit multiple times, sobriety remained out of reach. During this period, he still attended church, but his focus was centered on his image and his influence rather than a genuine relationship with the Lord;. He was too preoccupied with himself for personal growth to occur.

Yet even amidst these struggles, Jonathan’s drive for learning never wavered. Remarkably, he earned degrees e in Game Design and Media Communications. While recognizing its value for his career, his passion wasn't satisfied. He then took his next step and began studying Music Composition.

Recovery of mind, body, and spirit

Jonathan realized he couldn't serve others without first taking care of himself. His passion for people remained, but healing needed to start within before he could share that love with others. Through therapy, the support of family and friends, and above all prayer, he confronted and overcame his struggles with addiction and alcoholism. Though he occasionally is confronted with temptation, he is about to celebrate his second year of sobriety.

After his former Sunday school teacher invited him to church, and with the continued request of his mother, he returned to church. Though he initially went for her sake, he was immediately met with an overwhelming sense of love and support. It felt as though the congregation saw a man rebuilding himself and welcomed him with open arms. He was welcomed as a flawed human being, but one back on the correct path. Feeling God's love reflected through this community, Jonathan knew it was time to redirect his life fully.

Return to life, rejuvenated

Jonathan began reading his Bible and praying daily, something he hadn't done in years. He attended sermons and lessons at his church, eagerly anticipating each new revelation. While he had always known of God’s existence and Christ’s sacrifice, he had lost sight of that gift. Now the original teachings of his childhood combined with newfound insight. Choosing to serve purposefully rather than taking on every role in sight, he followed where he felt genuinely called. Experiencing God's hand in his life in profound new ways, Jonathan found a deep closeness and warmth that continues to drive him today.

Jonathan hopes to share his testimony through his music, both times of pain and struggle, and his return to the Light. God placed people in Jonathan's life to help him in times of need, and reached down when he had hit rock bottom. He was always present whether Jonathan saw it or not. Jonathan wants others to know this truth.
